Recently, I’ve been asked a lot for tips on how Moms can stay sober.
And I appreciate them asking because being a mom is trying AND being sober is trying but when you combine the two – WHEW! It is a whirlwind!!
We can seriously use all the help & support we can get! With that in mind, we have a community support group of badass mommas just like you! Come join our safe space of awesomeness & understanding in Brave Sober Moms HERE
Now for the How to Stay Sober Tips for Moms goodness:
The Grace Tip
Whether you’re newly sober, have been sober but a new mom, OR you’ve been sober & a mom for a while but feel like you’re sinking…
This is a big time of transition for you!!
If either is the case, you may be experiencing LOTS of exhaustion, emotions & possibly a lot of anger.
It’s all possible, and it’s okay.
Nothing has gone wrong here.
If you’re anything like me, showing grace to myself was a new thing. I was used to a lot of self-shaming and tearing myself down constantly.
It will be a practice, but the grace you have with yourself is going to be life changing!
The Space Tip
I’m sure you’re already thinking “Leona, I’m a mom. I don’t get space”
Exactly. I completely understand. At this time, my boys are 2 & 5 and ALL up in my business.
Just hear me out….
As we have already went over, it’s a HUGE time of transition.
- You’re learning how to function in this life without booze/drugs
- You’re learning how to overcome shame & guilt that you’ve always lived with and in turn learning how to love who you are (I offer a FREE course on this in Brave Sober Moms)
- You’re trying to figure out who you are (We cover this in the said above FREE course)
- Healing from your past
- All the while, being a mom to your kiddos and trying not to lose your shit
This is seriously not for the faint of heart. You NEED space.
Here are a few things I do/have done (depending on the season):
a) Have a non-negotiable daily down time for a mental break/reset.
I will set my kiddos up with Blippi or something and then go chill in my bedroom by myself. Sometimes I’ll do a 30- minute guided mediation, or I’ll just gaze out my window, sometimes I’ll even get a cat nap in. Whatever my body & soul need; I really try to focus on that.
b) I take one day a week off everything.
We eat leftovers, I order pizza, or we just have cereal all day. I don’t do chores or business things. It’s just a break to rest & do what I wanna do for fun (which can also be sitting on the couch all day watching my fav movies)
c) Get a nanny/do daycare or kid swap with a trusted friend/family member
I have done both of these at different times in my sober mom life.
I remember hearing that you don’t get help so you can work more; you get help so you can rest and do things you enjoy.
I have napped while the nanny or friend is here, I will do the heart work, I will watch movies, I will meditate, go sit by a river, get lunch with a friend….
d) Get up an hour before the kids.
It’s the little things like going pee by yourself, drinking a glass of water, or just sitting in bed while journaling.
Just get the space for yourself.

Another “How to Stay Sober Tip for a Mom” is:
The Alternative Tip
As someone who used to work with others on their health & fitness journeys, I learned a “secret” was finding alternatives to your normal Go-To
For the 1st year of sobriety, I at TONS of ice cream sandwiches, donuts, and candy bars; it was a hell of a lot better than going for the booze & pills
Do you have trigger times? What can you have in place?
I started getting into teas for my evening drinks.
So think on that to make this work for you.
The Community Tip
I would not have made it this far as a sober mom if it wasn’t for my community of women. And I’m not exaggerating.
With my first little gent I had extreme PPA (Postpartum Anxiety), and it took everything in me to not turn to booze or pills.
Furthermore….
I don’t know if you’ve noticed this or not but there is a HUGE market geared towards getting moms to drink.
Movies, mom nights out, it’s on cups, on advertisements, as wall décor…. Like, for reals.
So, with that being said, a community of women who are sober and moms will really make a difference in your life.
And we again, we do have a group of just that! You can join us HERE
The Recovery Tip
I had been using for 19+ years and I really needed help in HOW to live life sober because it had been a while…
There are tons of recovery programs out there; if you’re not in one already, I highly recommend you finding one that fits you.
The one I do is completely free and has saved my ass the last 6+ years of sobriety; if you’d like to know what it is, you can connect with me, and we’ll go over that.

And those are my core tips to how I have stayed sober as a Mom! I hope they help, and again, please join us in Brave Sober Moms for understanding, support, and badass tools to rock your sober life even harder.
Keep rocking on,
Leona.
